Huestis Tucker's Award Winning Kitchen Design

May 2019 -- Text goes here
Connecticut Cottages & Gardens Innovation in Design Award for Kitchen Design
Kitchen Aerie
The challenge of this project was to marry a modern kitchen/family room renovation and extension with the existing, beautifully detailed early 19th century Victorian house. The owners wanted something that could happily and seamlessly exist with the traditional, yet fairly elaborate detailing of the existing house, and have a clean, open, and more modern feeling. They also wanted the room to be as glassy as possible to take advantage of the south facing light and views of their lovely garden.
We started by squaring off an existing “L” shaped space to create one large room that would provide areas for cooking, eating and relaxing. The axial arrangement and centering of doors, windows and ceiling beams helps to define and differentiate sections of the room, while maintaining a lofty, open, greenhouse feel for the entire space.
We designed the kitchen cabinets to be a quiet background that would be enhanced by key decorative elements. The finely mullioned steel doors and windows are a special and standout feature in this room, and a nod to the existing leaded glass windows elsewhere in the house.
The ceiling paneling references the existing ceiling detail, without replicating it exactly. Most of the existing ceilings are coffered with a series of deep beams and beaded board paneling in between. For the new ceilings, we used a larger, v-groove paneling and low-profile coffers for a more modern take on the original detail.
Substantial casings, base, and crown moulding were selected to maintain the sense of craftsmanship and grandeur of the existing home. Other decorative elements, such as the range hood, the shelf brackets and the light fixtures all add layers of detail that refer back to the detail in the original home, maintaining a sense of continuity from past to present.

Featured in Connecticut Cottages & Gardens

January 1, 2017 -- Connecticut Cottages & Gardens January 2017 issue features a photospread of a recent residential project in Litchfield County. The web version of the feature, "Tour an Art-Filled Modern Farmhouse," includes a slideshow.
We want to thank DJ Carey, the editor of CT C & G, Suzanne Gannon, who wrote the article, and John Gruen, who took such great photos. We especially want to thank our clients for allowing their home to be published. This project was a great collaboration with them and with Marcia Tucker, the interior designer (no relation, just a coincidence). It was fun to see what a few small moves could do to change the feel of a house, and really rewarding to see it finished and decorated so beautifully.

Huestis Tucker Architects an A-List Finalist
Huestis Tucker "designed an authentic Shingle-style home with broad overhangs and large front porch that fit right into the neighborhood context, and made it energy efficient, too. " |

One of several spec homes that architect Bob Tucker and builder/developer Peter Thalheim of Harbor Builders have created together in Old Greenwich over the years, this home looks great and functions beautifully. Tucker designed an authentic Shingle-style home with broad overhangs and large front porch that fit right into the neighborhood context and made it energy efficient, too. A well-connected kitchen is open to the family room, and accessible from the dining room via a a butler's pantry. In the basement, full-size windows bring light into the space, which includes a playroom and home theater. To make it energy efficient, solar panels for hot water were tucked into the back of the home, and a cistern collects rainwater. It’s so efficient, in fact, that the homeowners’ electric bills are actually less than those at their New York apartment.”
