Open the swinging doors of this carriage house and instead of horse-drawn carriages and riding tack, you will find two gleaming sports cars on a polished concrete floor, French doors leading to a patio and a staircase to a loft above. The roughly 1200sf building is a reimagining of traditional vernacular carriage houses and barns. The result is a marriage of 19th century charm and 21st century functionality. The owners wanted a building to house their car collection, fit into the established landscape, and act as an extension to the existing pool and outdoor entertainment area. The carriage house was designed to serve other needs as well: Guest cottage for visiting family; teenage space; and office for the wife’s lifestyle business. In other words, the building had to be flexible enough to meet a variety of possible uses. Once the program was established, we worked to design a building which would be both fun and functional. The exterior design blends historic elements from barns and carriage houses such as board and batten siding, metal roofing, large overhangs, swinging carriage house doors, and a lighted cupola. The interiors are a synthesis of rustic features and more polished elements. The reclaimed wood and the painted v-groove board act as a foil to marble countertops and modern light fixtures and furnishings. The loft space above includes a cozy bunk room, sitting area, and bar; the multi-use space can accommodate houseguests, a teenage hangout, or even an escape for the owners on date night.
