The owners had lived in the old house on this lot for many years, raised their children, and were thinking about leaving the neighborhood to find a more suitable house for their current situation, when a neighbor and friend talked them into building a new house on the site, and recommended us as the architects who could help them get everything they wanted in a new house, but still feel at home in their neighborhood. The house was designed for the corner site and for water views that had to be stolen across the neighbor’s yards, and so the tower came into being as a way to put their kitchen, master bedroom and home office all in the prime view location. The entry porch is actually used for sitting, and there is another small patio off the kitchen that is more private, where they have drinks or meals in the warmer months. The tower also has an elevator, so they can age in place and won’t have to give up their new house in the old location anytime soon. The interior was designed in collaboration with Kate Swope of Kate, Inc., with an eye to the owner’s collection of large paintings and other art and furniture they had collected over the years.
