The owner, an avid equestrian and animal lover, envisioned a compound of buildings which together would have the feel of a gentleman's, or in this case, a gentlewoman's farm. The complex was to include a house, a horse barn, future paddock and chicken coop. Our directive was to create a relaxed home where she and her young family could enjoy their horses and their beloved dogs.

The design is a series of interconnected buildings organized around two courtyards. A winding drive brings visitors first to the entry courtyard fronted by a welcoming porch. The drive then continues through the porte-cochere between the barn and the house, into the inner courtyard with access to the garage and the mudroom entry. The exterior materials and details were inspired by a favorite shingle style carriage house from the 1800s that combines a relaxed utilitarian feel with a quirky but elegant combination of shingles, stonework, and trim details.

In keeping with the farmhouse aesthetic, the interior details are kept simple. Mouldings and millwork are kept to a minimum. Instead of installing elaborate crown mouldings in the Living Room and Dining Room we created a plaster cove with a simple picture rail below.

The heart of the house is a connected, south-facing Great Room. Ceiling beams, arches, the island and table top were all hewn from trees taken down on the site. Wide oak floors and oil rubbed bronze hardware complete the farmhouse feel.

Other key rooms include a generous mudroom with a brick floor that provides plenty of storage for coats, riding boots and leashes, and a breezeway with 12' folding doors that open on each side to connect the inner courtyard to the rear patio for entertaining. The house also has a geothermal heating system.
