New Canaan Dutch Colonial

Renovation / Addition

This renovation began with a simple request to turn a tired 1950’s ranch into something larger, two story, and in keeping with a changing neighborhood.  The owner really liked the gambrel roof shape, which allows for a lot of room in a limited height. We were able to fit a large master suite with sitting room, plus 2 other large bedrooms into the new second floor, while keeping one bedroom downstairs for guests and turning another into a paneled library.  The first floor was completely gutted, with new trim and a more open flow.

Outside, detailing consistent with a Dutch Colonial style was added throughout, giving the house a feeling of being older than the original actually was.  .  In the back, we added a deck over the new sunroom area, which opens out to a bluestone patio that was designed to fit the contours of the hillside behind the house. Copper flashing and gutters, solid wood brackets, an eyebrow window, and bluestone and mahogany porches all help to enhance the level of quality that now marks this as one of the finer houses in the neighborhood.
