House on the HarborConnecticut ShorelineRenovation/Addition |
This project was unusual in that it consisted primarily of renovation of existing spaces and only a small addition of a carport and mudroom/powder room. The existing house was built at the turn of the century and had obviously been renovated several times before, most recently in 1990. A large part of our work actually involved undoing those renovations and returning the house to something more like its original state. On the exterior this involved the removal of three layers of stucco and re-stuccoing in the traditional method, removing the slate roof and two layers of asphalt and cedar shingles beneath, then re-installing the slate roof. On the interior, we renovated the Kitchen, Library, Mudroom, Master Bath and Dressing, as well as the third floor bedroom and bathroom and three other baths on the second floor. In addition, we replaced the main stair, taking out a curved stair that had been added in the 1990 renovation and installing a more substantial and appropriate stair in the same location. We also replaced all the windows in the house with historically accurate weight and chain double hung mahogany windows. On the first floor porch, the windows replaced fixed french doors which had been added in 1990 and which leaked constantly in the windblown rain. |
